Gaston County Is Counting Bees — And There’s a Bigger Reason Why

If you saw people spending an unusual amount of time staring at flowers around Daniel Stowe Conservancy this weekend, there was a reason. The Conservancy participated in the 2026 Great Southeastern Pollinator Census, a regional community-science effort that gets everyday people involved in observing and recording the insects visiting our plants.

The concept is surprisingly accessible. Participants complete an official 15-minute count, recording the pollinators they see visiting a selected plant. Daniel Stowe offered staff guidance and survey materials during its Friday and Saturday census activities, while official count days were expanded through Monday, August 24, allowing people to continue participating independently.

This is also the second consecutive year Daniel Stowe Conservancy has participated. That consistency is important because collecting information year after year can help identify changes in pollinator communities rather than simply providing a snapshot of one weekend. Daniel Stowe says the information can also help evaluate habitat restoration and demonstrate the ecological value of native plantings.

For Gaston County, there is a broader local story here. Daniel Stowe has long been one of the county’s most recognizable destinations, but programming like this gives residents another way to interact with the property. Instead of simply walking through beautiful gardens, visitors can participate in projects that help people better understand the land, plants, and wildlife around them.

And that’s one of those small quality-of-life details that makes a community interesting. Parks, trails, gardens and outdoor destinations matter, but the programming happening inside those spaces matters too.
